The best way to get the most out of your makeup look is to take care of the canvas it's on. And the best way to do that is to find the right skincare products that are right for you. Whether you have normal, dry, oily, combination skin or are prone to breakouts, in the beauty market today, there is something that will work for you no matter what your budget is. But how do you find it? I'm going to go over a few of my favourite brands that I like to use.
As a makeup artist, one question that I get often from my clients is how to pick the right foundation. And although there certainly is a foundation that is right for them, the real solution is finding what skincare routine works for them first, namely, what will set up their skin for smooth foundation makeup application. I'll get to best foundation in my next article as it requires it's own place in my heart and place in the universe.
I'm sure you know the drill. Drinking water and eating right are great ways to make your skin glow naturally, but if you're like me, and drink coffee instead of water (hey, coffee has water in it but sadly it doesn't count) or maybe you don't drink water as much as you'd plan, getting the right moisturiser is a great way to counter dehydration in skin.
There are 4 main categories of skin types: Normal, Dry, Oily and Combination. Any or all of them can also include, sensitive skin and acne-prone skin. If you're not sure which one you are, no problem! Your best bet is to get something that works for all skin-types, like Tatcha Water Cream named below. If you have sensitive skin, staying away from perfumes, chemicals, and parabens are your best bet.
First, let's determine what type of skin you have, whether it's Normal (I'll refer to as (N)); Dry (D); Oily (O) and Combination (CO). For N-types, you don't break out too often, you don't get too shiny in the nose area too often, you're a rare one, but a lucky one. For the D-types, like me, you might find that your foundation settles into lines or in areas of your face that are thin (such as under your eyes), then you might have dry skin. For O-types, you might discover that you get a little shiny in the T-zone, forehead-nose area, and when you use liquid foundation (if you do), it might not last very long and can seem to get patchy (wear-off). And finally, you might be CO-type, if you get a pick of everything I mentioned above, a little oily in the T-zone, a little dry under the eyes and cheeks, your skin-type, might be a little more complex, but it's just as easy as figuring out what moisturiser will work best.
Skin-care products can get pricey, but like I said before, making sure your skin is cared for is the best start to having a flawless makeup application. It all starts here, so if you ever splurge on anything, spend it on skincare. Nix the expensive mascaras and bronzers, and spend the money in this area. Your skin and complexion will thank you for it.

Here are the moisterizers and face creams that I found to work best with clients with the following types:
1. Tatcha Water Cream retails for $68 (link below), best for all skin types. It's my holy grail and why I am naming first. You'll feel moisturised and refreshed. And over time, you'll see a radiance. It's my personal favorite and the one I use daily. Link here
2. Keils Ultra Facial Cream retails for $29.50. It works great with oily skin best but it can work for all types too. It has amazing reviews online. Face creams tend to be a little counterproductive for people with oily skin, and although this is a facial cream, it's one of the few that can work with oily skin just fine. If however, you feel it's a little too emollient for you, serum facial moisturisers work great for oily skin. Link here
3. Embryollisse Lait-Crème Concentrè retails for $23 on Amazon. This is the above-all, in my humble opinion, best skin moisturiser for makeup artists, and you'll find it in my own makeup artist kit for my clients. It is my go-to and what I take with me on all my travels. It's my favorite and you'll never see me without it. Best of all, it's priced comfortably as well. It's free of parabans and fragrances so it's also great for sensitive skin types as well as acne-prone skin. Embryolisse has a serum formula, so for oily skin, this would be a great match. Link here
